Where we work

Two lakes, one watershed

Most people know Big Turkey. Fewer realize the Conservancy looks after Henry Lake as well, or how much land drains into the two of them. Here is the whole of it on one map.

Big Turkey Lake and Henry Lake, LaGrange & Steuben Counties, Indiana. Big Turkey runs about 450 acres and reaches 65 feet at its deepest. Seven wooded islands sit in the lake. Turkey Creek and the inlet through Henry Lake feed in, which is why what happens on the surrounding farm ground matters to the water.
Why it matters

What happens on the land ends up in the water

Big Turkey sits in the middle of working farm ground. Rain moves across those fields, into the ditches and streams, and into the lake. That is not a complaint about farming. It is just how the ground drains, and it is why the Conservancy works on the land around the lakes, along the ditches, stream banks and field edges, and not only on the water itself.

Most of what we do follows from that one fact.
